Brown Bag Lunch


We had a brown bag lunch with our families today. Those moms and dads who were able to came to school and we had a picnic lunch with them outside. It was the perfect weather for a picnic today.

R.C.M.P. Tour


Today we went on a tour of the rural R.C.M.P. station. It was very interesting and we found out a lot of things. We know for sure that none of us ever want to be put in jail. Thank you to Chad Hoffman for taking us on the tour, and thank you to Mr. Beatty for coming with us.

Our Indoor Carnival


We had an indoor carnival the last day before our break. There were many activities including basketball and a hockey shoot, snakes and ladders, pillow fights, a fish pond, face painting, and golf, just to name a few. There were also good things to eat like popcorn and all kinds of baking. we had an exciting and tiring afternoon, and it was a great way to end the week.

Decorating Easter Eggs


We decorated Easter eggs with our grade 6 buddies. We had a lot of fun decorating and visiting, and we didn't even break one egg!

Rabbits!


Today for show and tell we had three baby bunnies come to our classroom. They were three weeks old and still crawled along with their tummies close to the ground. They were not scared of us at all, and we all got to pet them. They were very cute and we really enjoyed having them come to our class. We also read several books about rabbits, watched a video, and did a shared writing activity listing all of the things we learned about rabbits.

Farm Safety Presentation


We had a farm safety presentation this week. The kindergarten class and Class 1.2 came to our room to listen to the presentation with us. We learned many things that we should and should not do to keep ourselves safe at home.

Day of Pink


Wednesday was "pink day", and a lot of us wore pink and signed each others pink shirts (real or paper ones) to show that we were taking a position against intolerance and bullying.

When Will It Be Spring?


We are getting very impatient for spring to come. Some students in our class are even trying to chip away the ice to find the hop scotch game that is painted underneath. It is time for spring activities and it is very difficult to wait any longer for all of the snow to melt!

Grade 6 Buddies


Today when our grade six buddies came we read books to each other (yes...we can now read to our buddies) and played the math game "Give a Dog a Bone" on the computers. We found that often the grade ones were better at finding the numbers on the 100 chart than the grade 6's!

Ordering Lengths


We are working on a measurement unit in math and today we learned how to order objects according to length. We did so by checking which of our toy cars travelled the farthest past the ramp. Check our video to see how we did it.

Science Center Visit


People from the Science Center will be doing presentations for different grades on Tuesday and Wednesday. We went to a presentation on animals and their five senses today, and we participated in hands-on activities using our five senses.

St. Patrick's Day


We had a very busy day on St. Patrick's Day. We made rainbow toast, which was a lot of fun to do and very tasty too. Then we fingerpainted with green pudding, which was also delicious. Then we went sledding with all of the grade one, two, and three students for the afternoon. We went home very tired and ready for our three day weekend!

When we problem solve we have several things to think about. First we have to decide if we should add or subtract, then we have to decide which strategy we can use to solve the problem, and finally we have to write a number sentence for the problem. We are getting better and better at doing problem solving!

Doubles Facts


We have been learning our doubles facts in math. Today we made doubles flashcards to take home so we could practise them. We also practised them in class today with one person pretending they were the teacher and the other person pretending they were the student.

Addition and Subtraction Stories


Today we used ten frames to help us make number sentences. We got very good at combining (for addition) and separating (for subtraction) using ten frames.

Are You Smarter Than an SRC Member


Today everyone in K-4 went to the gym to watch the student representative council and the teachers play a game called "Are You Smarter Than An SRC Member?" It was a lot of fun, and we found out that Yorkdale Central teachers are very smart!!!

Brain Breaks


Today Mrs.Bulitz, our school division's educational psychologist, came and presented a lesson to us on "learning to learn". She talked about the five ways we learn (using our five senses), and taught us some exercises that help get our brain ready to learn. She called them "brain breaks".

Valentine's Day


Today we celebrated Valentine's Day. We made Valentine bookmarks, we had a special shared lunch (thanks moms and dads for sending us all of that delicious food!), we played games, and we delivered and opened Valentine cards. We had a busy, enjoyable day.

Our 100 Day Party


We celebrated being in school for 100 days on Friday, and we had a very busy day. We spent a large part of the day working in pods, which included making necklaces out of 100 fruitloops, doing 100 piece puzzles, making 100 day glasses, stamping 10 groups of 10 to make 100, and more. We really had fun doing a search of our room to find 100 chocolate kisses hidden around the room! We hope that the next 100 days of grade one will be just as much fun as the last 100 were.

Book Boxes


We all have our own book boxes that have books we can read in them. They also have magazines, animal books, and some favorite books. Everyday we all get our book boxes and read to ourselves. We have been practising to build our stamina, and now we we can read nine minutes without stopping. We want to keep practising until we can read for 15 minutes or more!

Outdoor Fun With Our Grade Six Buddies


We went outside with our grade six buddies, and we slid on the hills and played the game "Fox and Goose". It was a warm day outside and we had a lot of fun!

Field Hockey


Today we participated in a field hockey clinic put on by the Sask. Field Hockey Association. All grades from 1-8 will have a chance to learn how to play field hockey, which is similar to floor hockey and ice hockey.
