Getting Ready for Christmas


We have been very busy in our classroom getting ready for Christmas. We made Christmas tree ornaments and decorated our tree. We also made gingerbread men today.

New Books!


As part of book week every year the T.D. Bank distributes a book to each grade one student Canada wide. Today Marlene Byczynski from the T.D. Bank in Yorkton came and read a book called "Caramba" to us, then she gave each person in our class a copy of the book to keep. Thank you, T.D. Bank!

Equal Groups

We are working on numbers to 20 in math. Today we worked with a partner to see how many different equal groups that make 12 we could discover. At the end of each math class we have a "show and share" time where we share what we have learned with everyone in our class.

Our Museum Visit


Today we went to the museum for their annual "Celebrate Christmas Past" program. We
went on a wagon ride, we made a Christmas craft, and we went into the museum gallery for a scavenger hunt. Then we had a cookie and juice and got a treat bag and an ornament to take home. It was very well organized and we all had a lot of fun!

Show What We Know!


Report cards will be going home at the end of the month, and we are busy showing all the things that we have learned so far this year. We are becoming good readers, writers, and mathmaticians!

Remembrance Day Program


We had a Remembrance Day program at our school on Thursday afternoon. There was a color guard, a person who played the bagpipes, and a very good video. We had to sit quietly, and four people played trumpets before and after a moment of silence.

Art Folders


Today we decorated our art folders. We had to draw really big pictures because our folders are so big. They were so big that they didn't even fit on our desks, and we had to decorate them on the floor!

Smart Response


Today we learned how to use Smart Response. We read the questions from the Smartboard, then we use clickers to select the correct answer to each question. We each have our own clicker, and the Smartboard tells us when someone forgets to answer. It was confusing at first, but we had a lot of fun, and our grade six buddies were there to help us if we needed it.

Problem Solving


Today we worked on problem solving in math. We had to use the strategy "draw a picture" to find out how many legs three dogs have. We then used pictures, numbers, and words to explain our answer.

Visualizing


Today we had company in our classroom. One of our school division's literacy coaches, Mrs. Robertson, came to teach us how to visualize. She brought us visualization tubes, and we used them to look at objects around the room. She also modelled a "think aloud" for us. It was fun, and doing think alouds and visualizing will help us to become better readers.

We carved jack-o-lanterns with our grade six buddies. It is a messy job but we had fun, and we carved some wonderful jack-o-lanterns.

No Buses Today


Because of the winter storm we had very few buses were running today, and we only had nine students in our class. It was toooo quiet, so we combined with the other grade one class to learn about Halloween safety.

Our First Snow Day


Today was the first snowy day this school year, and there was certainly a lot of snow! By the end of the school day our playground was full of snowmen and snowforts, and we were all very wet!

The Wheels on the Bus


Today we read a story called "I Drive". As part of the story we sang "The Wheels on the Bus". Our favorite verse in the song is when the baby goes "wa,wa, wa".

Favorite Book Character Day


Today we could come to school dressed up as our favorite book character. We had some very interesting characters, including: a fairy, a hot wheel driver, Diego, Splat, two Pinkalicious girls, Dora, Bluealicious, Bel, General Grevious, Shaggy, and Robin Hood. I am glad that our class knows so many different book characters.

Take Home Books


We are becoming such good readers in grade one that we now take REAL books home to read to our parents every night. Remember parents, we have to practise, practise, practise if we want to become good readers!

Book Fair


Our school is having a book fair on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week. Our class went to "browse" and see what we think we would like, then we went home and told our parents what was at the book fair. We will also be having a family barbeque on Tuesday evening. We hope you all will attend.

Language Arts Pods


Today we worked in pods for language arts. We worked on the Smartboard with word families, we went to Starfall on the computers, we spelled word family words, we sequenced the sounds and letters of the alphabet, we played Go Fish with letters and sounds, and we did rhyming word puzzles.

Thank you!


Our school collected food for World Food Day, and our class remembered to bring a LOT of dry food and canned goods to give to people who need help. A great big thank you to all of our parents!

What Did They Say?


Today in guided reading we brainstormed possible conversations between the knight and the dragons as they sipped their tea in the story. We then used these ideas to act out the last page of the story.

I Like...


Today we wrote stories about things that we like. We then took turns sitting in the "Authors'Chair" and shared what we wrote with the class. We also put our illustrations up on the document camera so that everyone could see what we had drawn.

A New Math Game


We love to play a math game on the Smartboard called "Give a Dog a Bone". We have to find hidden numbers on the 100 chart, and we are getting better and faster at it every time we play it.

Terry Fox Walk


Today we went on a Terry Fox walk with the other students in Division One. It was fun, but we were very tired when we got back! We had freezies when we got back to cool us off.Thank you Superstore for donating the freezies.

Grade 6 Buddies


Today we met with our Grade 6 buddies. We meet once a week, and we do all kinds of fun things with them. Today we interviewed each other, and next week we'll introduce each other to the rest of the class. We will meet once a week throughout the year, and we usually keep the same buddy for the whole year.

Read the Room



In order to become good readers we need to read, read, read! One of the many things we do to practise is "reading the room". There are many charts and posters on the walls in our room that have words on them that we know how to read. Sometimes we "read the room" with a partner. When we do that we go around the room with a partner and take turns reading all of the words that we know to each other. It is very good practise.

Every Day 3 we go to our school library,so today was library day. We get to pick two books each, and sometimes picking those two books is a very difficult decision to make! Library day is always a highlight of our week.
